AI Translator quick start

To use AI Translator for the first time, install the app, step through a one-time setup (language, terms, model download, audio permission on macOS, a sample sentence), then press Start when your meeting has sound. Translated subtitles appear on a floating bar, and both speech recognition and translation run on your own computer.

Plus 1 GB free while downloading the model
Internet
Needed to download the model and register the Free trial
After that, recognition and translation run offline

Using Windows?

The steps below are the same on Windows, with a few differences: you install with a PowerShell command (or an .exe file, which may trigger a SmartScreen warning because the Windows build is not code-signed yet), there is no audio permission step, the app sits in the system tray instead of the menu bar, and shortcuts use Ctrl+Alt instead of ⌃⌥.

Install and open the app

On macOS:

  1. Open Terminal (press ⌘ + Space, type Terminal, press Enter).
  2. Paste the install command from the Download page and press Enter: curl -fsSL https://aitranslator.vn/install.sh | bash.
  3. Wait about a minute. The app is downloaded, verified, copied to Applications and opened directly. If macOS asks for system audio recording permission, choose Allow.

If you already downloaded the .dmg in a browser: drag AI Translator into Applications, open it (macOS blocks the first launch because the current build is ad-hoc signed and not yet notarized by Apple), click Done, then go to System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll to the bottom, click Open Anyway and confirm with your password or Touch ID.

On Windows:

  1. Open PowerShell (press the Windows key, type PowerShell, press Enter).
  2. Paste the install command from the Download page and press Enter: irm https://aitranslator.vn/install.ps1 | iex. No administrator rights are needed.
  3. Wait about a minute. The installer runs silently and AI Translator opens by itself.

If you already downloaded the .exe in a browser: double-click it; if Windows shows the blue “Windows protected your PC” screen, click More info, check that the App line shows the installer's file name, then click Run anyway.

For the details, including how to check the installer's SHA-256, see the guides to installing on macOS and on Windows.

First-time setup in seven steps

On first launch the app shows a setup wizard of 9 screens in a card in the middle of the window: the top shows the logo, “Step 1 of 9” and a progress bar, and the bottom has Back and Next. This guide groups them into seven steps. Windows has no audio permission screen, so its wizard has 8 screens; the step numbers under the screenshots below follow macOS.

Step 1. Choose the interface language

The choice is preselected to your computer's language: Tiếng Việt, English, 日本語, 中文 (Simplified Chinese) or 한국어; if your computer uses another language, English is preselected. Change it if you like and click Next. This also sets the language you read subtitles in; you can change it again in step 5.

Step 1 of 9: interface language.

Step 2. Accept the terms

Read the License Agreement (EULA) and the Privacy Policy, then tick “I have read and agree…”. Until you do, Next stays disabled. Both documents come in Vietnamese and English; if the interface is Japanese, Chinese or Korean, the app shows the English version with a short note. The same screen has an optional box, ticked by default, for sending error reports automatically when the app hits an error (no audio and no transcript text); untick it if you prefer, and change it later in Settings › Privacy. When you click Next, the app registers this computer's Free trial with the server, so you need an internet connection once.

Terms of use step with two collapsible documents, the required consent checkbox and an optional, pre-ticked checkbox for automatic error reports
Step 2 of 9: terms of use.

Step 3. Choose and download a model

The app shows your memory and free disk space and recommends a pack: a Mac with about 16 GB of RAM or more (or a Windows PC with 16 GB or more and a discrete graphics card with 6 GB of VRAM) gets the Standard pack (about 2.5 GB), any other computer gets the Lite pack (about 1.3 GB). Choose a pack and the next screen downloads it, with Pause and Resume buttons. You can click Next while it downloads; the model keeps downloading in the background. When it finishes, the app says “Download complete. AI Translator is ready to translate.”

Step 4 of 9: download the model.

Step 4. Allow system audio recording (macOS only)

macOS asks for System Audio Recording permission the first time AI Translator captures audio. This screen only warns you in advance: the macOS prompt appears at the Try it step below or the first time you click Start. Allow it. If you refused by mistake, the Open System Settings button on this screen takes you to the right place. The app does not use the microphone. More in granting system audio recording permission. Windows has no such step.

Step 5 of 9: system audio recording permission (macOS only).

Step 5. Choose your languages

In Translate into, pick the language you want to read. Tick the languages that may be spoken in the meeting (all five by default). Leave Source language on “Detect automatically”, or lock one language if you know the meeting uses only that one.

Choose your languages step with the Translate into menu, five rounded chips for the spoken languages and the Source language menu
Step 6 of 9: choose your languages.

Step 6. Try it

Click Play a sample sentence. The app plays an English sentence through your speakers, its subtitle appears on the subtitle bar, and this screen reads “It works. Translation: …”. Turn the volume up if your Mac is muted. If macOS asks for the audio recording permission now, allow it.

Step 7 of 9: try it.

Step 7. Read the notes and finish

Audio never leaves this computer. If the law or your company requires it, you are responsible for telling other participants that you use a translation tool. Closing the window only hides the app in the menu bar (macOS) or the system tray (Windows). On Windows, a new icon may be hidden behind the ^ arrow on the taskbar; the last screen shows how to bring it out. Click Start using AI Translator to reach the Home screen.

Translate your first meeting

Each screen in the left sidebar of the main window has an icon; in a narrow window only the icons show, and hovering shows the name.

  1. On the Home screen, check “Translate into” and “Languages spoken in the meeting” in the Languages card.
  2. The Audio source card defaults to “Whole system, except this app”. To translate just one app, click Change. On Windows, the source is the default playback device or a device you choose; picking a single app is not available yet.
  3. Open a meeting or a video with sound and click Start (or press ⌃ + ⌥ + T; on Windows Ctrl + Alt + T). The status goes from “Starting” to “Translating”; for the first few seconds the bar may read “Loading models…”.
  4. Read the subtitles on the floating bar. A small dot in the top-right corner of the bar turns green when sound arrives, and the “Input level” bar on the Home screen moves with it; a lighter line is a provisional subtitle that will be replaced by the finished sentence.
  5. Click Stop when you are done. The bar keeps its last lines so you can finish reading, and Open the transcript appears, showing time, original text and translation. Copy all works on every plan.

How to drag, lock, hide and restyle the bar is covered in the subtitle bar and shortcuts guide. The Free plan gives you 30 minutes of translation a day during the 10-day trial.

Common first-run problems

  • macOS will not open the app. Run the install command in Terminal (the app opens directly) or do the Open Anyway step above; details in the installation guide.
  • Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”. Click More info, then Run anyway; details in the Windows installation guide.
  • No subtitles, and the Home screen says “Nothing is heard although an app is playing sound…” (macOS). macOS has not allowed system audio recording; see the permission guide.
  • The sample sentence shows no subtitle. Check that your speakers are not muted and try again.
  • The model download stops halfway. Click Resume to continue from where it stopped.
  • You cannot see the subtitle bar. It may be hidden: click Show in the Subtitle bar card, or press ⌃ + ⌥ + H (Windows: Ctrl + Alt + H).
  • The first run takes a while. After an install or update the app may say “Preparing for first use. This can take a few minutes.”

Other problems are covered in troubleshooting.
